Children of Varuna

The Leviathans are a group of colossi considered sacred beasts of Avalon. These enormous creatures are said to be the children of the goddess Varuna, adorned with the same bioluminescent markings as their divine parent.

The people of the water and those who rely on the ocean worship these beasts as symbols of the goddess and her will. They are both greatly feared and greatly respected.

Warning: These are in no way tame beings. They have been known to serve as the goddess's wrath, dragging sailors down to the deepest depths, never to be seen again.

The Sixteen

Phalanx

"The Emperor" / "The World Eater" / "The Goddess's First Born"

The largest and oldest of the Leviathans, with stories saying it has been around longer than Avalon itself. Dwells in the deepest waters of the Varune Sea. Considered the king of Leviathans and worshipped as a deity by the Kou-toa.

Celosia

"The First Daughter"

Considered a mother to ocean creatures, peacefully traveling across all territories without issue. The only completely harmless Leviathan - the only one other Leviathans don't attack. Worshipped for her blessing and wisdom.

Hydrus

"The Storm Bearer"

Roams between the Avalonic and Doggos Sea. This beast attracts lightning storms wherever it swims, with bolts of electricity striking nearby passing ships. A living tempest upon the waters.

Barba

"The King Crustacean"

The largest and most feared of the Giant Crabs, dwarfing ships upon the waters of Ambrosia. Has survived centuries, shell scarred by storms, blades, and cannon fire. Back encrusted with broken anchors, shields, coins, and ship bones.

Cenobia

"The Kraken"

The largest and most feared of the giant squids. Makes territory in the upper waters of the Doggos Sea, making meals of ships unfortunate enough to come face to tentacle with it.

Argus

"The Sand Worm"

Makes its home in the waters and rivers of Ambrosia. Armored exterior allows easy navigation of harsh, barren waters. Tends to bury itself in sand, sleeping or feeding on volcanic vents until disturbed.

Valus

"The Brute"

One of the simpler Leviathans, focused solely on protecting territory through strength. Guards the outskirts of the Varune Sea as gatekeeper. Ships that cross into this territory are reduced to splinters, wrecks drifting to shores like storm victims.

Quadratus

"The Deep Caller" / "Elder of Kraken"

Possesses the most complex mind of its siblings. Controls territory not through might alone, but through methodical planning. Whispers speak of it calling to land-folk - though those who claim to have spoken with it are no longer in their right minds.

Gaius

"The Shark King"

Favors the volcanic, barren waters of The Western Sea. Its presence spurs volcanic activity - some believe it created many of the Western's islands. Body is always superheated; waters literally boil wherever it passes.

Avion

"The Rain Cutter"

The only Leviathan sea drake with the ability to fly, taking to the skies for advantage over prey. Spends half its time in sky, half in water, dropping down on unsuspecting ships passing through the Avalonic.

Kuromori

"The Sun Catcher"

Semi-aquatic sea drake ruling the islands of Torguay. Periodically comes to shore to sunbathe or bury in warm sand. Smaller than most Leviathans but armored with impenetrable scales. Worshipped by island dwellers who offer gifts for blessings.

Phaedra

"The Terrible"

Unlike her sister Kuromori, Phaedra actively hunts and eats all who stray into her territory. Highly aggressive and protective. Sometimes attacks Torguay settlements, grabbing villagers and dragging them back to the ocean.

Basaran

"The Rot"

A malignant force around Haven's Desert. Excretes noxious substances that force creatures to flee or suffocate. Fishing is impossible in this area. Spawns thousands of pearl-like eggs containing parasitic worms that take over hosts as living puppets.

Dirge

"Lord of the River"

Patrols the murks of the Dogma Rivers and Marshlands. This massive serpent is said to have created the rivers themselves, finding territory on land as its brethren claimed the seas. No less protective of its rushing waters.

Pelagia

"The Abyssal Lantern"

Monstrous quadrupedal angler claiming dominion over endless cave systems of the sea floor. Bioluminescent lure snakes into caverns like phantom light, deceiving prey into thinking they found safety. Scales gleam like living mirrors, making it nearly invisible when stalking.

Malus

"The Mechanical"

A completely mechanical Leviathan created by ancient Kou-toa ancestors. Guards the lost cities of the Kou-toa, protecting riches in the trench waters. Made entirely of metal with glowing eyes powered by unknown force. Hostile to everything - even the Kou-toa have forgotten how to control it.
